Stop by Dovetail on Friday May 1 from 7-10pm to shop the latest work by Chicago artist Allie Kushnir! Allie's launching her new collection of pillows and stationary based on her paintings. She will also be selling her prints and artwork. The trunk show will continue through the weekend. Allie will be here Friday night to talk more about her process and answer any questions you might have. Stop by and enjoy some complimentary punch while you shop!

About the artist, in her own words:

On paper, the process is fairly simple. Each item included in this line begins as a watercolor painting and either ends at that stage or makes its way into the computer where it is subject to slight adaptations for its intended home (ie. pillows, bags, stationery).

I have a background in fine arts which initially led me to honing my oil portrait painting skills. But in the last year or so, I found myself inspired by the flowing and seemingly transient quality to watercolor painting. The process is quick, unlike oil painting, and for me it commands an entirely new psychological approach to my artwork. Through a natural evolution of trial, error, and lots of elbow grease, my little stacks of loose watercolor paintings developed into more substantial pieces mounted onto wooden boards and subsequently more functional products such as stationery and throw pillows. The process has been a continuous learning experience, one that I have thoroughly enjoyed and is swiftly expanding.

My stationery is printed by a great group just outside of Chicago, my custom fabric is printed in California, and everything is sewn in Chicago by the wonderful Agnes Pogórecka. It is important to me that I keep each aspect of manufacturing in the US and so far it has been quite simple.

People like to know about the thought behind these paintings, but the truth is that a lack of thought and concentration often helps to shape the pieces that I consider most successful. At times I feel very focused and at other moments, my mind wanders. I think of the sea and the mountains, about how sleepy I am or how brightly the sun is shining. I think of how happy I feel or how happy I wish I felt. These thoughts may show in my work, but it is rarely intentional. I just paint and draw until something pretty appears...or until I'm tired and ready to move on.
